To the Editor:
I read with special interest the research report by Bandy and Irion entitled "The Effect of Time of Static Stretch on the Flexibility of the Hamstring Muscles," as well as the invited commentary by Walker and the authors' response to the commentary (September 1994). I commend the authors for their efforts to study the effects of different times of static stretching of the hamstring muscles (15, 30, and 60 seconds per day) over a period of 6 weeks. I believe that their experimental methods and conclusions were basically sound and that the results add to our body of knowledge about the effects of stretching exercises on this important muscle group. In her commentary, Walker provided valuable insight into some of the possible shortcomings of the study, as well as suggestions for future studies.
