To the Editor:
We read with great interest the article on the effectiveness of hamstring muscle stretching (October 1997) by Bandy et al. Stretching is often prescribed in treatment regimens for physical ailments; however, the exact duration and timing of therapy remain highly controversial. We applaud this latest effort to resolve this debate.
Unfortunately, several factors severely limit this study's applicability to the "real world" of clinical medicine. In the conclusion, the authors state that "there was no difference between stretching one or three times per day using either a 30- or 60-second duration of stretching." This statement may mislead any therapist who reads only the abstract or the conclusion. The statement "three times per day" is usually interpreted as an even spacing of treatment over the course of a day....
