Michels as Motivator

To the Editor:

I read with interest and admiration your Editor's Note (January 2000) in which you pay tribute to my most revered professor, Eugene Michels.

As a student at the (now defunct) School of Allied Medical Professions of the University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1976, I was inspired by Mr Michels' energy, his commitment to our profession, and his tenacity about the importance of clinical research. In a course entitled "Measurement and Research," and especially in an elective course entitled "Statistical Methods in Physical Therapy," Mr Michels motivated us to question current practice and to search for clinically sound answers in order to ensure that we are providing the best possible care for our patients. As you point out, Mr Michels pioneered what we now refer to as "evidence-based practice."

I am grateful to have been one of the countless physical therapists who have had the benefit of Mr Michels' guidance.
