Pharmacology for Physical Therapists

Gladson B. St Louis, MO 63146, Elsevier, 2006, paperback, 503 pp, illus, ISBN: 0-7216-0929-5, $44.95.

The purpose of this book is to provide basic pharmacology information for both practicing physical therapists and physical therapist students. The text is clear, concise, and includes important concepts related to therapeutic concerns for specific drug classifications.

This book is well organized. Twenty-four chapters are divided into 10 sections, either by a specific topic, system, or drug classification. The author uses a systems approach to present the drug information. Section 1 covers the principles of pharmacology and includes chapters on pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and adverse drug reactions. Sections 2 through 9 cover autonomic and cardiovascular pharmacology, treatment for pulmonary and gastrointestinal disorders, pain control, endocrine pharmacology, psychopharmacology, drugs affecting the nervous system, nfectious disease, and chemotherapeutic drugs and agents acting on the immune system. The final section discusses the relationship between selective cardiopulmonary and diabetic medications and exercise.

Several features increase the value of the text. First, each chapter includes illustrations that complement the written information. However, at times the illustrations are too detailed in comparison to the text. Second, every chapter ends with activities for students to complete that correspond with the information covered in the chapter. The activities vary from answering specific questions related to a case to interviewing individuals about their medications. Third, additional student resources also are available online that include Web links for further research, answers to selected activities, and updated drug information, as well as a free 6-month subscription to Mosby's Drug Consult.

The book concludes with 3 appendixes. Appendix A contains instructions and insights on how to use the Physician's Desk Reference. Appendix B provides information regarding online resources for drug information, and appendix C covers the generic and trade names of commonly used drugs.

The information provided in this book makes this a valuable reference for both physical therapist students and practicing physical therapists.
