Foundation Honors Physical Therapy Icon Florence P Kendall, PT, FAPTA (1910-2006)

A tireless supporter of the Foundation’s core mission to advance the profession of physical therapy through clinical research, Kendall dedicated her entire life to physical therapy and furthering its practice.
As a tribute to Kendall and in recognition of her longtime support of the Foundation for Physical Therapy and physical therapy research, the Foundation’s Board of Trustees has renamed its Mary McMillan Doctoral Scholarship, the Florence P Kendall Doctoral Scholarship. The Kendall doctoral scholarships are $5,000 scholarships given to physical therapists beginning their doctoral program. Applications for the Kendall doctoral scholarship are available on the Foundation’s Web site, www.apta.org/Foundation, under Awards and Scholarships.
The Florence P Kendall Doctoral Scholarships are funded by the Henry O and Florence P Kendall Endowment Fund, established in 1980 and endowed by Kendall’s brother, Dr Arthur Peterson. The Kendall fund has supported the entry-level doctoral scholarships since 2004. You can ensure that Kendall’s legacy continues by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Kendall Fund. Foundation Dinner Dance to Honor Kendall

The Foundation’s 2006 Dinner Dance—scheduled for Thursday, June 22, during APTA’s annual conference in Orlando, Fla—will now be in honor of Florence P Kendall, PT, FAPTA. In last month’s edition of Physical Therapy, it had been announced that the dance would be a tribute to the Charles M Magistro Distinguised Services Awardees. To join your colleagues in celebrating this revered teacher, mentor, clinician, researcher, and lecturer, order your individual tickets. Clinical Research Network Update #2 Researchers Present Preliminary Reports at the Combined Sections Meeting

On Thursday, February 2, 2006, project investigators from the Clinical Research Network (CRN) discussed their studies, the quality-of-life outcome instruments, and baseline results in a very informative 2-hour symposium: "Patient Perspectives and Quality of Life: Early PTClinResNet Outcomes."
The symposium consisted of presentations from each of the project investigators, an overview of the network, and a summary of quality-of-life outcome instruments. The agenda included:
- An Overview of PTClinResNet Speaker: James Gordon, PT, EdD, FAPTA
- Quality of Life (QOL) Measures in Rehabilitation Trials Speaker: Bryan Kemp, PhD
- Strengthening and Optimal Movements for Painful Shoulders in Chronic Spinal Cord Injury (STOMPS) Early Outcomes. Speaker: Sara Mulroy, PT, PhD
- Pediatric Endurance Development and Limb Strengthening (PEDALS) Early Outcomes.
Speaker: Sharon DeMuth, PT, DPT, and Loretta Knutson, PT, PhD, PCS
- Muscle-Specifi c Strengthening Effectiveness Post Lumbar Microdisectomy (MUSSEL) Early Outcomes Speaker: Kornelia Kulig, PT, PhD

Three Sections’ Events at CSM Raise Fun(ds) for Research

Thanks to all who attended the three section-sponsored special events at CSM in San Diego to support the Foundation for Physical Therapy.
Following the Opening Ceremonies, the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section’s Dance for Research, California Dreamin’, attracted conference attendees and friends for some late-night music and dancing.
Grass skirts, leis, pink fl amingos, and beach balls dominated the décor at the Sports Physical Therapy Section’s Beach Party & Luau. An estimated 750 guests of every generation rocked to the tunes of the Beach Toys, tested their agility in surfi ng and limbo contests, and enjoyed entertainment by the ebullient host King Kukelele. The Luau and Silent Auction of music-and sports-related memorabilia raised funds for the Foundation’s Clinical Research Network.
Home Health Section’s fi rst Coffee Tasting Open House drew an early morning crowd to compare Starbucks brews and receive a travel mug. Thanks to all who stopped to have their fi rst cup of the day with the Foundation and Home Health Section.

Foundation Seeks Donations for Online Auction

The Foundation for Physical Therapy is accepting donations for its annual auction to be conducted this year online. Donors may register online via the Foundation’s auction Web site, http://physicaltherapyfdtn.cmarket.com. Interested bidders also may sign up on the Web site to receive an e-notice of the bidding opening in late May. Popular auction items include jewelry, vacation packages, restaurant certifi cates, sports or theater packages, physical therapy products, and children’s gifts. Physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, components, and education programs are encouraged to donate items in these categories.
