The Foundation for Physical Therapy's Board of Trustees recently awarded a total of $190,000 in clinical research grants and doctoral scholarships to 10 physical therapists. Recipients of $40,000 clinical research grants to evaluate the effectiveness of physical therapy interventions are: Fabrisia Ambrosio, PT, MPT, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh, for "NMES Enhances the Transplantation Potential of Stem Cells Into Dystrophic Muscle"; Beth Fisher, PT, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Southern California, for "Comparison of Two Locomotor Training Programs on Brain and Behavior in Early Parkinson Disease"; Hlapang A Kolobe, PT, PhD, Professor, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, for "Self-Initiated Prone Progression in Infants at Risk for Cerebral Palsy"; and Diane Wrisley, PT, PhD, NCS, Assistant Professor, University of Buffalo, for "The Use of Rotational Perturbations for Balance Training."

The grant awarded to Ambrosio was generously funded by the Legacy Endowment Fund. The grant awarded to Fisher was funded by the Magistro Family Foundation Endowment Fund. The grant awarded to Kolobe was funded by the Pediatric Endowment Fund, made possible with generous gifts from APTA's Section on Pediatrics. Wrisley's project was made possible by the 2007 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge, an annual grassroots student fundraising effort coordinated by physical therapist students from across the country.

Recipients of the $5,000 Florence P Kendall Doctoral Scholarships for the 2006–2007 academic year are: Eric Allen, PT, MPT, SCS, University of Iowa; Stacey DeJong, PT, MPT, PCS, Washington University in St Louis; Adam Goode, PT, DPT, Duke University; Christine Malecka, PT, MPT, DPT, NCS, University of Delaware; Amee Seitz, PT, DPT, NCS, Virginia Commonwealth University; and William Thompson, PT, DPT, University of Delaware.

Appearing in PTJ this month is an article titled "Dose Estimation and Surveillance of Mechanical Load Interventions for Bone Loss After Spinal Cord Injury," coauthored by Richard K Shields, PT, PhD, FAPTA, and Shauna Dudley-Javoroski, PT, MPT. Shields is president of the Foundation, former trustee, former chair of the Foundation's Scientific Review Committee, and 1987 recipient of a Foundation doctoral student support grant. Dudley-Javoroski, PT, MPT, is the recipient of a McMillan (2003) and Promotion of Doctoral Study (PODS) I (2005) and II (2006) scholarships. This article is based on findings from their current study, "Musculoskeletal Plasticity after Spinal Cord Injury." Dudley-Javoroski was supported by her PODS scholarships while working on the study. The project also was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Also appearing in PTJ this month is an article titled "Movement Training Advances the Emergence of Reaching in Infants Born Less Than 33 Weeks Gestational Age: A Randomized Clinical Trial," coauthored by Jill C Heathcock, PT, PhD, Michele Lobo, PT, PhD, and James C Galloway, PT, PhD. The findings presented in this article are based, in part, on research done as part of Heathcock's and Lobo's dissertations completed while both were supported by PODS scholarships. Heathcock received a McMillan Doctoral scholarship in 2001, PODS I scholarships in 2002 and 2003, and PODS II scholarships in 2004 and 2005. Lobo received a McMillan Doctoral scholarship in 2000, a PODS I scholarship in 2002, and PODS II scholarships in 2003 and 2004.

A fascinating interview with Kathy Sullivan, PT, PhD, co-lead investigator of STEPS, one of the Clinical Research Network (CRN) studies, is now accessible at PTJ's Podcast Central (http://www.ptjournal.org/misc/podcasts.dtl). She is interviewed by PTJ Editor in Chief, Rebecca Craik, PT, PhD, FAPTA, about the article "Effects of Task-Specific Locomotor and Strength Training in Adults Who Were Ambulatory After Stroke: Results of the STEPS Randomized Clinical Trial," which appeared in PTJ's December 2007 issue. The article—coauthored by Katherine J Sullivan, PT, PhD; David A Brown, PT, PhD; Tara Klassen, PT, MS, NCS; Sara Mulroy, PT, PhD; Tingting Ge, MS; Stanley P Azen, PhD; and Carolee J Winstein, PT, PhD, FAPTA, for the Physical Therapy Clinical Research Network (PTClinResNet)—outlined the primary outcomes of the study. During the interview, Sullivan discusses the surprising findings of the study. She also talks about her current work on the "Locomotor Experience Applied Post-Stroke" (LEAPS) project—the largest rehabilitation grant awarded by NIH ($13.5 million over a 5-year period)—and how the CRN contributed to its development.

Sullivan also received Foundation doctoral student support grants in 1996 and 1997.

The Membership and Corporate Partner Phase of the Foundation's major gifts campaign was announced at the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in Nashville. The campaign aims to raise $4 million by the APTA Annual Conference in June for future research, through the generous support of APTA members and physical therapy–related industry.

A team of Campaign Executive Committee members—including Foundation for Physical Therapy President Richard K Shields, PT, PhD, FAPTA; Campaign Chair and former Foundation President Nancy T White; Trustee Emeritus Charles Magistro, PT, FAPTA; and Trustee Marilyn Moffat, PT, PhD, DPT, CSCS, FAPTA—promoted the "Destination: Research Excellence" campaign at CSM.

Many APTA members are following the remarkable example set by sections, chapters, board members, and many well-known leaders in the physical therapy world, who contributed over $3 million during 2007 to support physical therapy research.

Shields explained, "The profession faces significant and pressing challenges as it strives to advance evidence-based practice, reimbursement for services, enhanced patient care, new interventions, and its leadership in rehabilitation within the health care community. The impact the Foundation can make on the profession now and in the future depends upon continued growth of investments in strategic research areas through endowments.

"Endowments enable the Foundation to plan the research agenda for the future and target high impact research projects that are critical to our profession today. We need the support of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and all those in physical therapy–related industries to ensure that our profession's research keeps up with the changing times of health care."

Support "Destination: Research Excellence" with a pledge or direct gift, online at www.FoundationforPhysicalTherapy.org. Gifts also can be made as pledges for tax advantaged donations or future gifts from retirement plans. For details, call 800/875-1378.

In addition to Shields, White, Moffat, and Magistro, members of the Campaign Executive Committee include: Bill Boissonnault, PT, DHSc, FAAOMPT; Mark DeCarlo, PT, MHA, SCS, ATC; Patrick Graham, PT, MBA; Dianne Jewell, PT, PhD, CCS, FAACVPR; Colleen Kigin, PT, DPT, MS, MPA; Carole Lewis, PT, PhD, GCS, FAPTA; Rodney Miyasaki, PT, MA; Bob Richardson, PT, MEd, FAPTA; Mary Sinnott, PT, DPT, MEd; and Steve Tepper, PT, PhD.
